During a medical emergency, unconsciousness is something that can petrify anyone near the casualty. Unconsciousness might not always suggest that things have gotten serious. Just taking care of a few basic steps and some prompt actions can help you steer through such a situation along with providing much-needed comfort to the casualty.

Let’s have a look at what can be done!

In an unconscious adult who is breathing normally, just place him/her in the recovery position (unless you suspect back injury). In such a position, his airway would be open and any fluid or vomit can drain out of the mouth. This will enable the casualty to roll forward.

*Try not to leave the casualty until you feel the need to go and call for emergency help.

STEP 1: Position Arms and Legs

  • Remove any heavy things from the casualty’s pockets.
  • Ensure that his legs are straight and kneel beside him in level with his chest.
  • Place the arm nearest to you at a right angle to his body with the palm facing upwards.
  • Pull his far leg up at the knee until his foot is resting flat on the ground.
  • Lift the other arm, bring it across his body towards you and hold the back of his hand against his chest.

STEP 2: Turn the Casualty

  • Grasp the casualty’s raised knee with one hand and support the hand against his cheek with your other hand.
  • Pull through the knee and gently roll the casualty towards you.
  • Keep the casualty’s head back and neck aligned during turning.
  • If you have help, one person can support the head while you turn him as required.

STEP 3: Adjust the Head position

  • Tilt the casualty’s head back slightly to keep the airway open.
  • The casualty’s uppermost hand should be under his cheek to help maintain the correct position.

STEP 4: Adjust the Leg and the Arm

  • The casualty’s upper leg should be at a right angle at his hips and knee.
  • His lower leg and back should align.
  • His lower arm should be at a right angle at the shoulder and elbow.

STEP 5: Monitor the Casualty

While waiting for help, monitor the casualty’s level of consciousness, breathing, and pulse and note any changes.

Note: If the normal breathing stops, call for help and immediately jump to CPR till the emergency services arrive.

Conclusion:

Immediate steps along with calling for emergency services are one of the main aspects of saving someone from dreadful mishappenings. It is our duty to make you aware of the same and your duty to equip yourself with these basics that would help you throughout your life.
